Men’s Clothes: How to Store Them

Men often email me to ask how to store their custom made suits, so I thought I’d offer a few simple best practices for most of the clothes in your closet. If you’re looking for information on seasonal clothing storage - like putting away winter coats in summer, .

Remember that animal fibers (especially wool) can attract moths. Wherever you store your clothes should have some ventilation and be dry. Keep your wool clothing clean (moths like moisture and especially food stains). Some strong smells, like cedar, will discourage moths from setting up shop, though only mothballs will kill them.

Shoes: With shoe trees, preferably wooden. “Lasted” trees (trees in the exact form of the shoe) are best, but not necessary. Try buying trees for about $12 at your local Nordstrom Rack, or keep an eye out for pairs for about $3 at your local thrift stores. Shoe bags (usually made of cotton flannel) recommended when traveling, or for shoes that are likely to get dusty, like velvet slippers.

Socks & Underwear: In a drawer. Cedar smells nice. I actually store mine in an old aluminum cooler that has a few lavender sachets in it.

Shirts: Folded or hung from a hanger. Button the collar to maintain its shape and another button further down the shirt front to keep them from flapping around. A slimline hanger is fine for shirts, but don’t use wire. You’re not an animal.

T-Shirts & Polo Shirts: The thin cotton of polos can stretch if hung. Fold and stack them.

Suits & Sportcoats: custom made suits and sportcoats should be hung. At the least you should hang them from a hanger with some shape (a traditional suit hanger which bends forward slightly, rather than the straight plastic five-for-three-dollars hangers from the dime store). It’s even better to hang them from hangers with some width in the shoulder. You want something that supports the full shoulder pad, shaped not unlike your own shoulder. This keeps the shoulder of the coat from deforming. Wood is more attractive, but plastic will also work fine here (and is lighter weight). These usually only come with very high-end custom made suits, but they can be purchased new, and most of mine came from estate sales. Decent suit hangers were apparently much more common thirty or forty years ago.

Trousers: I like felted clamp hangers, clamped onto the hem of the trousers, if you have the room. This helps wrinkles fall out. Hanging them on traditional trouser bars is perfectly fine, though. Look for bars with felt (best) or rubber (OK) coverings to prevent slippage.

Casual Pants: I fold my pants which don’t take a crease - blue jeans and chinos, primarily. Some denim enthusiasts hang their jeans from a hook rather than fold them to protect their wear patterns, but that’s further than I’m willing to go.

Belts: Rolled or hung from their buckles.

Ties: Rolled or hung, untied. If you’re lucky enough to have a fancy closet, you may have shallow drawers with dividers appropriate for rolled ties. If so: God bless. I’ve hung my ties for many, many years and they’ve suffered no apparent ill effects. Mine hang from a rack that was once designed to be used with clips to hang baseball caps. It’s a series of horizontal bars. You could get the same effect with a freezer rack hung on a wall. There are also plenty of tie hangers in the shape of coat hangers.

Handkerchiefs & Pocket Squares: These can be hung from clips on a rotating rack if you’re really fancy, but I just fold mine. A cedar box is nice, but you can also use clear plastic shoe boxes so you can easily spot your favorite.

Sweaters & Knits: never hang sweaters on coat hangers. Fold them. Hanging them will mess them up, especially over time (but even in a few hours for heavier pieces). Even if you think of that cardigan as “coat-like,” it should still be folded, not hung.

Hats: Hook ‘em! Or put them in hat boxes. And remember they can be a moth target, too.

Sweatpants: I recommend storing these in the garage, in a box marked “Salvation Army.”

Dressing for a Job Interview

Daniel writes: I’m going on my first interview in many years next week. While I’m certain the range of ‘what to wear’ is broad depending on the kind of company you’re dealing with, I was curious what PTO’s take on a basic acceptable interview tailored made suit might be.

Acceptable dress does indeed vary company to company.  If you’re interviewing to work at a comic book store, they might think it a bit odd if you show up in a suit.  That said, in most office-based companies, they’ll think it odd if you don’t.  Your goal in dressing for an interview should be to convey that you care about the opportunity, and that you’re willing to be part of the team.  You should dress conservatively, without ostentation, and err on the side of formality.

Yesterday, a friend of a friend was headed to a job interview at a talent agency.  He was wearing brown rubber-soled sneaker/dress shoe hybrids, pinstriped pants, a white tie and a grey shirt without a tailored made suit.  The message he sent was: I hate dressing up, and I don’t care enough about this opportunity to overcome that for one day.  Needless to say, he didn’t get the job.

Basic interview attire is a navy or gray suit, black shoes, a white shirt, and a simple tie.  Watch Stephen Colbert and you’ll see a perfectly executed interview suit on a nightly basis.  Never showy, always appropriate. Simple, neat, never distracting.

You needn’t spend a lot of money on the suit.  You can buy an appropriate interview suit at Target for $200 and $50 of tailoring.  It must fit you, and it must be conservative.  Pinstripes are fine, though not as good as solids, and chalk stripes are a bit much.  Don’t wear black unless you’re interviewing for a job as a bouncer, priest or undertaker.  Your goal, again, is to prove you care without making your interviewer think you’re dressing for attention.

Unless you’re interviewing for a job in a creative profession, you’re unlikely to be looked down upon for wearing a suit.  There are some jobs where a hiring manager might not want to choose the “square,” but they’re few and far between.  If you’re interviewing for a job as, say, a gallerist, feel free to ask the HR person or even the receptionist the general dress standard in the office.  Whatever they tell you, follow it, but err on the side of dressed-up and conservative.  If they say, “everyone wears t-shirts, jeans and sneakers,” the least formal outfit you should chose is a plain black t-shirt, dark denim jeans, and clean, sharp shoes.

Again: your goal is to show that you care and that you’re not there to impose yourself upon them.  When you’re interviewing for a job, you’re asking people to consider how well you can do what is asked of you.  If you can dress appropriately, they’ll assume you can behave and work appropriately.  If you can’t, they’ll assume you can’t.  If you’re dressed well, they’ll be talking to you - a person with qualifications and a personality - not to the slob who obviously doesn’t have his shit together.

How to Clean Shirts

A five-step system for getting rid of stubborn stains in shirts using vinegar and Oxiclean.  This isn’t infallible, but you’d be amazed at the results.  I often will take a flier on a great thrift shirt with ring-around-the-collar, and give this a shot.  Usually I end up with a shirt that’s clean as a whistle.

 

1 Soak shirt in a solution made from one gallon hot water (as hot as it will come out of the faucet) and one cup of vinegar. Let the shirt soak for 30 mins to 2 hours.

2 Rinse shirts, and squeeze out excess water. Empty bucket and rinse. In a cup, prepare a concentrated Oxy-Clean solution. Make sure to use the Oxy-Clean granules that come in the tub. Make the solution about 10 parts HOT water to one part O-C. Usually this amounts to two scoops of O-C (using the provided scoop) per 4-6 ounces of water. You want this to be very concentrated.

3 Apply the strong solution generously to the stained areas. Place the shirts in a bucket (so that the solution doesn’t flow away, or dry) with the stained areas towards the bottom of the bucket so they stay nice and covered in the solution. Allow to soak overnight. It can also help to use an old toothbrush and scrub the stained areas every hour or so, if you’ve got the time.

4 In the morning, remove the shirts from bucket. Fill the bucket with a gallon of hot water, and two scoops of the Oxy-Clean (basically, follow the recipe on the package for a general cleaning solution) and mix well. Place the shirts in the bucket, and soak for 2-24 hours. This just helps to remove any trace of stain. You might want to stir the shirts around with your hands after you put them in the bucket with the weaker solution just to remove some of the stronger solution that is still on the shirts.

5 Remove, and wash/rinse in the regular cycle on your washing machine.

Note: I find that this normally removes sweat/dirt stains from the armpit, neck, and cuff with ease. For really strong stains, you might have to repeat the process a few times.

Twenty-Five Pieces of Basic Sartorial Knowledge So You Don’t Look Dumb

When I’m interviewed about men’s style and Put This On, I’m almost invariably asked “what are the fashion mistakes you see men make every day?” or “what is the most basic style knowledge men often don’t have?”

That’s the kind of stuff I usually leave off this blog. After all: you’re discerning and tasteful! But every time I see some incredibly basic principle violated, I cringe. So: for the benefit of your slovenly coworker our your teenage cousin or your uncle who’s never had a job, I wrote this. Forward it to them. Anonymously, if you must.

Below are twenty-five pieces of vital information that every man over 14 in the Western world should know. Every man. No excuses. Seriously. Seriously.

1 Unbutton the bottom button of your jacket. It’s not intended to be buttoned.

2 Same goes for your vest.

3 Remove the tags on the sleeves of your jacket before you wear it.

4 Jackets sometimes come with white basting thread on their shoulders or holding closed their vents. Remove this thread before wearing the jacket.

5 Jacket pockets are intended to be opened. Use a small scissor or seam ripper.

6 More than three jacket buttons is never appropriate for anything.

7 On a three-button coat, buttoning the top button is optional, and some lapels are rolled so as to make the top button ornamental. In other words: if buttoning the top button seems wrong, it is.

8 Brown shoes, brown belt. Black shoes, black belt.

9 Belt or suspenders. Never belt and suspenders.

10 Your jacket sleeve should be short enough to show some shirt cuff - about half an inch. 

11 Your pants should end at your shoes without puddling.A slight or half break means that there is one modest inflection point in the front crease. If your pants break both front and back or if they break on the sides, they’re too long.

12 Your coat should follow and flatter the lines of your upper body, not pool around them. You should be able to slip a hand in to get to your inside breast pocket, but if the custom made suits  closed and you can pound your heart with your fist, it’s too big.

13 When you buy a suit or sportcoat, it should be altered to fit by a tailor. This will cost between $25 and $100.

14 Your tie should reach your belt line - it shouldn’t end above your belt or below it.

15 Your tie knot should have a dimple.

16 Only wear a tie if you’re also wearing a suit or sportcoat (or, very casually, a sweater). Shirt, tie and no jacket is the wedding uniform of a nine-year-old.

17 The only men who should wear black  custom made suits   during the day are priests, undertakers, secret agents, funerals attendees and yokels.

18 Cell phone holsters are horrible.

19 So are square-toed shoes.

20 Never wear visible socks with shorts.

21 Or any socks with sandals.

22 If your shirt is tucked in, you should be wearing a belt (or suspenders, if you’re wearing a jacket as well, or your trousers should have side adjusters and no belt loops).

23 Flip flops are great for the pool and the beach and not great for anything else. (Some say this is a matter of taste. We agree. If you have any taste, you will only wear flip-flops at the beach or pool.)

24 Long ties are not appropriate with a tuxedo.

25 Never wear polyester outside of the gym or theme parties.
